THE CHALLENGE
Every year, the Chicago Metro History Fair Education Center sponsors a city-wide history fair for middle-school and high school students. This competition starts at a local level and a handful of masterful students end up representing Illinois at the National History Day competition in Washington D.C.. Long before the school year kicks off, the National History Day people issue a new theme, and I am charged with creating a relevant poster for Illinois students.
THE PROCESS
Some years, the team at CMHFEC have some stylistic directions in mind based on the theme or other elements of the program. Other years, I'm left to my own devices to come up with imagery that communicates the topic and gets kids inspired—and hopefully excited.
